TVB
Television Broadcasts Limited, commonly known as TVB, is the first wireless commercial television station in Hong Kong. The company was established on 19th November 1967. Its major activities are television broadcasting, programme production and other broadcasting-related activities such as programme licensing, video distribution and satellite broadcasting etc. During prime time viewing hours, the Chinese Jade Channel and English Pearl Channel achieve a remarkable average of 84 per cent and 79 per cent of Hong Kong’s television audience share respectively. TVB is the largest producer of Chinese language programming in the world. Many of the Chinese programmes are dubbed into other languages and are distributed to more than 30 countries, accessible to more than 30 million people every day.
Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) launched Digital Terrestrial Television Services (DTT) on 31st December 2007. In August 2008, it launched the first-ever interactive data television service – TVBar - on free television in Hong Kong by adopting the MHEG-5 middleware standard, providing viewers timely and important information at the touch of a button. The first phase provided information on weather, Hang Seng Index, news headlines and the Olympic medal list. Other services including enhanced information to support relevant TV programmes such as food and travel programmes, programme synopsis/EPG (Electronic Programme Guide), and shopping information will follow soon.
MHEG-5 is one of the core technologies embedded in all our TV sets sold in the European region. Our motivation for supporting IMPALA is to see the expansion of broadcast support for MHEG-5 in Europe and beyond. The UK market has proven MHEG stability of operation, and suitability for not only digital teletext delivery, but also for multi-screen video selection of hidden services. Its efficiency in launch speed also makes it ideally placed as an instant display at channel zapping for broadcaster controlled splash-screen, as used for radio screensavers, and non-running service captions.
