Sony
Sony developed its own in-house MHEG stack to coincide with the launch of digital terrestrial TV in the UK in 1998. Since then it has been shipping this MHEG capability in ALL TV’s in ALL regions of Europe, even though only the UK broadcasters have taken advantage of it so far. Sony shipped almost 4.5 million units of its BRAVIA TV sets within Europe in the year ending March 31st 2008, and forecasts almost 7 million in the year to end March 2009, with almost all of them containing a digital tuner, and associated MHEG engine.
MHEG-5 is one of the core technologies embedded in all our TV sets sold in the European region. Our motivation for supporting IMPALA is to see the expansion of broadcast support for MHEG-5 in Europe and beyond. The UK market has proven MHEG stability of operation, and suitability for not only digital teletext delivery, but also for multi-screen video selection of hidden services. Its efficiency in launch speed also makes it ideally placed as an instant display at channel zapping for broadcaster controlled splash-screen, as used for radio screensavers, and non-running service captions.
