TechniSat, in cooperation with the German Weather Service and S&T Ltd., has launched the first MHEG-5 application in Germany - “TechniSat Germany & Regional Weather Service” - to coincide with the IFA 2009 show in Berlin. TechniSat’s service is based on MHEG ETSI ES 202184 R2.0 and has been launched under the name MultyText®. All future digital receiver equipment and iDTVs will be equipped with this feature, enabling them to receive MHEG-5 applications. TechniSat, the market leader in Germany for digital receivers, is pleased to be promoting new interactive services in Germany using the MHEG-5 standard. Furthermore, TechniSat sees this as its contribution to MHEG-5 gaining acceptance in the German market and an opportunity to introduce additional capabilities such as Video-on-Demand, access to broadcaster catch-up services, HD graphics, T-commerce and other interactive services.
One of the main commercial benefits of MHEG-5 is its complete cost effectiveness in delivering high levels of TV interactivity, allowing operators to offer a whole host of compelling new revenue generating services using genuine open standards technology. This keeps both deployment and running costs low. The scalability and flexibility of MHEG-5 means that its capabilities are constantly expanding and evolving to meet ever changing consumer demands, and Latens will be aligning itself to technology that has already been proven in the market.
